Antiques

Items over 100 years old are classified as antique. At Meyer's Secondhand and Antiques we buy and sell all types of pre-loved items and also unloved! Furniture, ornaments and objects d'art; things that have lay hidden in a 17th century attic or cave, that has been purchased, brought back to life and displayed in our exhibitions.

There are many styles of furniture found in France some of which have been mentioned in "about us".

When referred to as a style, it is generally not a specific period, but a reproduction made at a later time (what we would call a reproduction in Australia).

There are reproductions of many early periods such as Louis XIV, XV and XVI, including French Provincial (17th and 18th Centuries) that were made in the 19th century. It is important to note that the production methods, even though more advanced, were still employed by hand and are of excellent quality. They are also classified as antiques but never have the same value as an original piece made in the actual period. When it is genuine to a period of time in history and made in that time, then it is called epoque.

Pieces that have been manufactured by a cabinetmaker or workshop, and are marked on the actual piece, will also have a greater value depending on their reputation.
